South of the River is a non auditioned community choir celebrating diversity and harmony through a shared passion for singing. The choir’s repertoire includes the harmonies and rhythms of Africa, traditional gospel spirituals of the last century and, contemporary new world music. The choir is directed by Annemarie Sharry. Since forming in 2002 the 40 voice a cappella ensemble has inspired audiences at a diverse range of venues across Victoria. These venues include Melbourne town hall, Crown Casino’s Grand ball room, Federation Square, The Royal Melbourne Show, numerous community festivals; lots of major music festivals, pubs, Grape grazing in the Yarra Valley, restaurants, clubs and The Dame Phyllis Frost centre for women. As a community choir South to the River love to go out to the community. Some of the festivals we have played at in the last few years include; St Kilda festival, Stringbark festival Rowville, Eltham Jazz and Blues festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Apollo Bay Music Festival,Williamstown Music Festival, Bruthen Music Festival, Dandenong Ranges Music Festival. In 2009 South of the River will the Port Fairy Folk Festival to the long list of music and community festivals they have performed at. One of South of the River's greatest public performances to date was in the 2006 ABC Classic FM national “Sing Out” competition. In July 2006 South of the River won a place in the Victorian state final of this national competition. Of the 45 Victorian choirs who participated in the state wide audition process South of the River were one of only five finalist selected to “Sing Out” at the Melbourne Town Hall for a place in the national final. This performance was broadcast live across Australia on ABC Classic FM radio on Monday 31st July 2006. Wade in the Water the documentary, captures that journey and much much more.
